Becoming a Heritage Tree

Find out how Heritage Trees in Singapore start their journey as a nomination to the selection process and maintenance of the Heritage Tree.

A) Nomination

A Heritage Tree begins its journey as a nomination, which may be submitted by any member of the public. The nomination is assessed based on a set of quality criteria; a girth of more than five metres (depending on the species), botanical, social, historical, cultural and/or aesthetic value.

B) Selection

Once a nomination is received, the tree undergoes a thorough evaluation, which includes a health check by arborists and consultation with relevant stakeholders.

The Heritage Tree Panel meets once every two years to deliberate on nominated trees that meet the first level of evaluation. If formally endorsed by the Heritage Tree Panel, the tree will be recognised as a Heritage Tree and added to the Heritage Tree Register.

C) Maintenance

After endorsement, the Heritage Tree Secretariat will work closely with site managers and landowners to ensure that Heritage Trees receive regular inspections and appropriate maintenance, including pruning, mulching, and structural support where necessary.

Landowners are encouraged to contact the Heritage Tree Secretariat if they observe any changes in the condition of the Heritage Tree, or if it is affected by development or construction works.
