Nauclea orientalis is native to India through to Myanmar to Malesia, New Guinea and Australia. This species was introduced to Singapore as a landscape plant.

The tree can grow to a height of 30 m and bears spherical clusters of fragrant flowers that develop into edible but bitter tasting fruits. The wood is used for timber and in woodcarving. Traditionally the tree bark was also used to treat stomach aches and animal bites.
