The Tahiti Chestnut is a medium sized evergreen tree that grows up to 30 m in height, with a crown diameter of 4.6 m. This species is likely from eastern Malesia.

The seed is edible when cooked and is among the most important nut species in the Pacific. The wood is also used for crafts, tool handles, canoes and light construction. Currently, this species is the only edible and culturally important species in the genus Inocarpus.

This species of tree was introduced into Singapore Botanic Gardens in 1876 and this specimen most likely dates back to the original introduction. This Heritage Tree had a girth of 4 m when measured in Year 2005.
