The Tempinis is a bushy evergreen tree that can grow up to 35 metres in height, with a rounded crown and rough, greyish-brown bark. Its leaves are oblong-elliptic, tipped, and thinly leathery, with a drooping habit and a rather yellowish-green hue, while young leaves emerge in a pinkish-brown colour. The flowers grow in hanging green spikes, or catkins, measuring between 8 and 20 cm in length. The fruits are round, approximately 1 cm in width, and are enclosed at the base of the flower.

The leaves can be recognised by the unequal sides at the leaf base with the broadest side foremost. The species was previously known as Streblus elongata, where the generic epithet Streblus means 'crooked' in Greek.
